My Plans for Touring Disney

Screen Shot 2015-07-07 at 12.30.47 PM

Considering that crowd levels are consistently higher at Walt Disney World, The Mature Mouse™ believes in researching and planning park touring before every trip. As I stated in my previous post, Planning My Solo Trip to Disney World, I rely on TouringPlans.com for the best way for dealing with crowd levels. I purchased a subscription, which currently cost 12.95 a year, and renew it each year. I do not work for, nor do I profit from, TouringPlans.com. I believe in the value of this site and just wanted to share my thoughts with you.

UntitledDuring the planning process for my recent solo trip, TouringPlans.com made a reevaluation of the crowd levels and sent me an email informing me of these changes. This allowed me the opportunity to make changes to my daily plans before my trip, including making any alterations of in my FastPass+ reservations. Expectations for crowd levels increased, but I did not make any changes. I believed that my personal plans created by TouringPlans.com would still work given the different expectations.plan

My touring plans are generally very orderly and structured. However, for The Mature Mouse™, a well-planned touring of the parks allows for flexibility once in the parks. The image to the right is a visual I created to outline my touring plans for my recent trip. I took images from my files created in TouringPlans.com. The X in the upper section indicates the FastPass+ reservations, based on the TP suggestions, for morning at Magic Kingdom.

The graphic below indicates how close their expectations were to the actual crowd levels in the parks during the week of my vacation, along with an analysis of the results. The outcome is very impressive, which is the reason why I rely on this site in planning my Disney World trip.

One of the common complaints I hear from non-Disney fans is that the parks are crowded, and they do not wish to deal with all those people while on vacation. The Mature Mouse™ is not a fan of crowds, either, but I am a fan of the Disney Parks. As I have expressed in many of my posts, I revel in the storytelling, the theming, and detailing Imagineers have created. Erin Foster, an original member of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, is a guest writer on various Disney oriented blogs. Her article, An Introvert’s Guide to Disney World, offers an interesting look at dealing with the crowds in the Disney parks.

I Am No Longer At Disney

A satirical look at the post-trip crash all Disney vacationers experience.

Guests feel an intense level of excitement as they begin their Walt Disney World vacation. The disheartening feeling is just as intense as your vacation ends. There comes a time when you begin to realize you are no longer at Disney.IMG_7152

I was still riding in Disney transportation as I left Pop Century. My luggage had already been checked at the resort, so Disney would insure that it would accompany me in my flight home.

You will find numerous busses outside the terminal at Logan in Boston. One of these would take me back to Maine. I thought of the line of Disney busses standing by to take you to the parks. Maybe I was only tired. Or, the Disney bubble of euphoria still engulfed me.

I finally began to realize my recent Disney experience was over when I had to pay for parking at the Portland bus station. I ceased to be one of Disney’s guests. No one was insuring my luggage would reach my destination. No one was driving me ‘home’. There were no plans to be made for a  trip to the parks the next day.IMG_7790

I made my own breakfast the next morning. Gone was the food court with all its choices. I was not on Disney’s dining plan anymore. I visited the local mall later in the morning and I had a Disney flashback as I walked through the food court. I thought about having a snack, but I realized all my snack credits were gone. I would have to pay out-of-pocket instead of using my MagicBand.

There is a Disney promotional commercial that suggests that the power of the MagicBand. would make life so much easier. I always thought this was just a gimmick, a marketing ploy to make you believe that the magic of a Disney experience extends beyond the parks. The Mature Mouse™ is well aware that Disney magic does exist, even when your vacation is over. This is why fans read and write blogs, listen to podcasts, and follow fan sites.

Three Reasons Being a Disney Fan is the Best

Fan of Mickey sums it up well, being a fan of Disney is great. Those friends and family of yours that do not understand you obsession are just missing out on all the Disney magic.

Fan of Mickey

When folks I work with and even others I run into find out that yes, I love Disney and it pretty much dominates most of my life, I sometimes get strange looks. Some question why I go to Disney Parks all the time and others dare to suggest that they “hate” going to Disneyland or Disney World(!!!). Of course, I try to convince them otherwise. I commonly hear in response that Disney is for kids. (Lame reason, I know,)

However, I think these people just don’t get it. Here are my three reasons why being a Disney fan is the best of all hobbies, fandoms, etc.

1. There is always something new coming out to enjoy (and obsess over)

The Force Awakens TrailerFor Disney fans, there is always a something new coming out several times each year! Whether it is an attraction, film, television show, music, or video game. Brad Bird’s homage to Walt Disney’s…

A Dreamer’s Take on Disney’s “Tomorrowland”

Screen Shot 2015-06-04 at 3.40.59 PM“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”  Walt Disney was a dreamer. He had the courage and determination to make those dreams a reality, and then Walt shared those dreams with the world. “Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future . . . with hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.”

Tomorrowland, the new Disney movie, reflects the dreams and ideals of Walt Disney. It was his plan to create a new experimental community that would improve the world in which we live, building a better tomorrow. The futuristic world in Tomorrowland is just that, a prototype community where all the dreamers would make their ideas a reality, thereby building a better world. However, things go wrong. Humanity looses its need to dream, choosing instead to accept what is, allowing the destruction of what could be. The point of the film is to encourage us to continue to dream, and to have the courage and determination to make those dreams come true.

As a fan of the Disney Parks, The Mature MouseTM is drawn into the imagined world that Walt built because they are places where dreams do become a reality, if only a short time. Walt Disney World and Disneyland are greater than any amusement park. The Disney Imagineers bring to life the realms and experiences of our collective memories, as Walt had done. Whether it is a walk down the quaint Main Street, a thrilling train ride through a mining town, a visit with not-so-scary ghosts, or dinner with a beast; for a few moments we escape from the humdrum of our everyday lives.

Athena offers Casey Newton an opportunity to experience Tomorrowland, if only for a few fleeting moments. Together, with the help Frank Walker, these dreamers struggle to return to Tomorrowland, and renew the possibilities of our future. Walt Disney had plans for EPCOT, a city where the possibilities of our future could be tested today. Unfortunately, EPCOT has yet to fulfill Walt’s original plan.Screen Shot 2015-06-04 at 3.43.06 PM

Maybe someday, if Disney fans continue to dream, and Imagineers have the courage and determination necessary, it could become a reality, the way it does in Tomorrowland. After all, as Athena says in the movie, “Dreamers need to stick together.”

Chapter 10: Mining Walt Disney World Magic

It has been a long time since I posted a June 2014 trip report. Life happens and our plans often go awry. I have shared various articles relevant to me, and hopefully to you, my reader, between original posts . Here is the next original chapter from my June 2014 trip. Thank you for your patience and your continued support.

We arrive at the Magic Kingdom around 9:30. We walk down Main Street, enjoying the sights, sounds, and scents that are so unique to this part of the park. We take the Fantasyland spoke off the hub, and head toward the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. We have a FastPass for the first hour after park opening.

Magic Kingdom is already getting crowded, even at this early hour. It is extremely hot and humid, which is expected in June. I had not realized before today that the path inclines from the hub into Fantasyland. Most of the Magic Kingdom is built on the second floor, above the utilidors, which are at ground level. Is Fantasyland constructed on a third level of the park, or is this section of the park higher to afford flexibility in design of the attractions?

IMG_1738

After reading so much about the newest addition to Fantasyland, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, I am excited to finally be experiencing this attraction. The FastPass line moves very quickly and soon we are stepping into a mine car. The ride is smooth, for a roller coaster. There is none of the usual coaster click-clack. This is one of the milder coaster experiences in the various parks. Details included by the Imagineers make this a very scenic ride. The hills and waterfalls seem so realistic. The dark portion of the ride, into the mine, brings to life all of the dwarfs using a new 3-dimensional technology. Those familiar faces seem to have stepped right out of the cartoon. Imagineers also included various components from Snow White’s Scary Adventure to pay homage to that original attraction. We do not sense the swaying of the mine car as much as we had thought we would.

IMG_6154

After visiting with the Dwarfs, we walk over to the Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid attraction. We fondly remember taking our daughter to view this movie when it first came out. It has always been one of her favorites. Through various effects, the journey takes you under the sea in a clamshell as you relive Ariel’s story. It is cute, but definitely themed for families with younger children. I would have preferred an attraction extending the story, not just a ride through the actual story.

We are hungry by the time we finish our journey with Ariel. IMG_6145We take a leisurely walk through Fantasyland, making a short rest stop at Rapunzel’s tower. Then we cross into the ‘new world’ of Liberty Square. I really enjoy the theming of this area of the Magic Kingdom. The Imagineers captured every detail from Revolutionary America, right down to the sagging shutters held up by leather, because metal was scarce during the time period of the Revolutionary War. Imagineers even included a pitch toward the center of the walkway, which is painted brown to represent the sewage found in the streets of that time period.

We eat our lunch at the Columbia Harbour House, sitting at a window on the second floor. The service and food are excellent for a Quick Service location, and the atmosphere harkcolumbia-harbour-house-gallery03ens back to the taverns of the period. We had a great view of my favorite attraction, the Haunted Mansion.

After lunch, we meander through Liberty Square, over into Frontierland, and on to Adventureland. We have a FastPass reservation at Pirates of the Caribbean. I would say that this is probably my second favorite ride in all of Walt Disney World. It is a classic, and I fondly remember experiencing it as a child2014-06-25 12.00.32 in both Disneyland and Disney World. The ride has changed some, with nods to the various live-action movies. We get wet, a little, during one of the larger drops of the boat.

At the time of this post, Pirates of the Caribbean is due to go down for refurbishment for some time. I will not be able to ride it during my next trip in June of 2015. However, I am looking forward to additional scenes and improved technologies this refurbishment might bring.

Our morning at Magic Kingdom has been full of new experiences found memories. As we make our way toward the train station to exit the park, we once again take in the sights and sounds of Main Street. This includes a walk through the Emporium for a little souvenir shopping. I would have enjoyed spending more time in the Magic Kingdom today, but circumstances would not have allowed. However, I intend to spend more time, and more days, enjoying Walt Disney’s original realm during my next visit.

Cinderella Castle Adds Regal Turrets at Magic Kingdom Park

Magic-Kingdom-Hub-Area

Disney Magic exists in the details created my Imagineers, which seems to be a common theme for this blog. More of those details, enhancements  to Magic Kingdom’s Central Plaza, have been revealed. There are new turrets in front of the castle. Disney Parks Blog has a first look at the additions to Cinderella’s Castle. The Mature Mouse™ is looking forward to seeing these changes in June. I plan on posting pictures during and after my trip.

A Disney World Vacation is the best

With so much to do and see at Walt Disney World, The Mature Mouse™ cannot understand why people choose to go anywhere else. This sentiment does not only apply to families; a Disney World vacation is a great choice for the more mature empty-nester. One does not need to have children in tow to enjoy all that Disney World has to offer.

Yes, Walt Disney World has attractions, rides, appropriate for all ages. However, as I have pointed out in numerous post, the resort also offers much more. There are fine-dining restaurants, and first-class hotels. There are first-class golf courses, and miniature golf courses. There are educational experiences, and cultural influences. There is a lot for vacationers, guests, to be thankful for at Walt Disney World.

Disney Questions has created a list of the top 10 things to be thankful for at Disney World. This list is not all inclusive, but it offers the non-Disney fan clear reasons why they should consider a vacation at the resort. I especially agree with number 7 on the list: The Cast Members. I make an effort to acknowledge those cast members who go above and beyond their role by handing them a thank you card during my visit.

Top 10 Backstage Experiences at Walt Disney World

Disney Dining has posted their top 10 ways to get a look behind the scenes, or backstage, at Disney World. The Mature Mouse™ will be taking the Marceline to Magic Kingdom Tour during my solo trip in June. I am not sure what I am more excited about, getting a closeup look at the Magic Kingdom, or being in the Magic Kingdom an hour earlier than anyone else. Have you taken this tour? If so, please let me know what you thought of your experience. What other things on this list have you done to get a behind-the-scenes look at Disney World or Disneyland? Is there something you have done that is not on this list?
