Strolling Disney’s Streets of America

The Mature Mouse™ enjoys a stroll along the Streets of America while visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is just a matter of time before this site is gone. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity of experiencing The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights along these streets. Plans suggest that this area will become a part of the new Star Wars Land.

Formerly known as New York Street, for its theming of an American cosmopolitan city, it was rename in 2004 with the addition of the San Francisco street scenes. The Streets of America area was built to serve as set locations for the working Disney-MGM Studios. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is no longer a functioning studio, and many of those attractions are closed or slated for closure.

Just off the Streets of America is a mermaid fountain, which was used in the movie Splash. It sits between the Studio Catering Company and Toy Story Midway Mania. This statue has been in the park since it first opened 1989. It depicts a classic demure mermaid sitting on a curved platform supported by four dolphins that are spouting water. This is not the only reference to the movie Splash that can be found in the Disney Parks. At the time of its creation, then-CEO Michael Eisner suggested the new flume-ride attraction be called Splash Mountain to help promote the movie.

Will you miss the Streets of America once they are part of a galaxy far, far away?
